I see where Martin has decided to throw away more than 100 years of greatness, diluting their proud name with a bunch of cheapy knockoffs.
Sad, really.
My beloved Gretsch, on the other hand, has never been stronger since Fender took over operations. Funny how having a few key players with a ticket on the cluetrain makes all the difference.
Most guitarist probably don’t even know who he is, but Mike Lewis is a real American Guitar Hero. Prior to revitalizing Gretsch, he revitalized Fender’s amp efforts, which had been badly foundering for years. In both cases, he made faltering brands rediscover a glorious heritage, and he didn’t do it by dumbing things down.
So here’s the moral: know why people use your brand, your service, your widget, whatever, and build on that. Anything else is just wasting everyone’s time. In other words, do what you do, and do it better.
